When I have raced at BIR about once every 2 years, I have never had a problem finding an open spot on the blacktop rolling in late Friday night.
Several tracks that I have raced at have some reserved spots, but anything not reserved is first come, first served. What good will it do to have a bunch of really nice, unused pit spaces? How does it affect you personally if the unwashed masses are allowed access to a pit space down the road from you?
The no camping fee deal does sound like a positive.

My "Guess" is that the track wants to make some $$$ for the Premium Pro Pad spots. Which---will in turn add $$$ back to the track for future improvements...like more electrical hook-ups. You can still get on the Pro Pad---it's just going to cost you.
Personally, I would rather pay some money...know I have the same spot--no matter what time I show up AND not have to park in the sand/grass.

If the convenience justifies the cost for you, then it shouldn't bother you to have people parking on the asphalt for free down the road.
Seems like a move that won't mean anything to racers that already reserve spots but will anger some that don't. It isn't really helping anything to put more racers in the grass/dirt.

Tony---It looks like for once you and I don't agree on something.
But now put yourself in my shoes...I pony up the $ for a spot for the season----then someone down the road doesn't (for the whole year let's say)----that aggravates me. Prety simple to me---if you want to park your rig on the Pro Pad...open up your wallet and park on Hollywood Blvd (become an Official Tar Baby). If not, park in Poverty Pits, sweep sand out of your trailer all weekend.

But, in the past, why did you pay when you didn't need to? Were there some races in which you would have been unable to park on the asphalt without having your reserved spot?
You paid so you could aways have your familiar spot, NOT for the right to park on the asphalt since you could have done that for free. If you felt it was worth the money, then where other people are parking should be irrelevant.
I see this as: "The people with the nice rigs and low-slung cars that like to park on the asphalt have lots of money. Let's get our hands on more of it."

I'm agreeing with Tony on this one. It shouldn't matter at all that someone who doesn't pay for a spot gets to park on the asphalt. Everyone who doesn't buy their Hollywood Blvd spot either has to get to the track extra early to make sure they are on the asphalt or take the risk that someone else won't park there. Everyone who buys a spot uses it as insurance so if you happen to show up late to the track you have a spot. The number of spots sold last year probably went down and Brainerd probably assumed that it would drop again. By instituting this "operation pickpocket" program they hope to have more people reserve the spots for the whole year. That way they can afford the secutiry...

I agree with Andy on this one,and I have always paid for a spot at BIR. If someone doesn't have the funds to park in the pro spots I would not reject them like second class citizens. I think I'm going to park in the sand or mud this year. I have some of my best memories parking in poverty. Less chance of aggravating the rich folk. |

| There seems to be a lot of discussion about the pavement pit spots. I would rather see people park on the tar if spots are available. With more people parking in the sand, dirt, mud, and grass. That just tracks excess dirt to the race track. The track sweeper should take care of that extra dirt I guess. There was another topic brought up at the meeting that there will be no more running extension cords from Barn A or B. It also was possible to rent a spot in Barn A or B for $10 for the weekend, I believe car only. If you also wanted to leave your trailer, motorhome and trailer until the next race there would be a cost of $30, outside storage with no liability. |

No one is saying you can't park on the tar/Pro Pad...it's just going to cost you. And like I stated before, if enough folks do I'm certain some of the $ would go back into improving those "spots" with more electric hook ups in the future.
We are not talking a boat load of $ here folks. $200 /5 events ($40 per/event) or $200 /15 days (Fri,Sat,Sun) $13.33 per/day.
With the money you will save on Camping alone this year it will be well worth the upgrade to a Pro Pad spot if you haven't done so yet.
Not to mention, if you ever have to work on your car (god forbid) at the race track...a tar spot is a heck of a lot better than sand/grass.

WOW---Look at me defending BIR...but, fact of the matter is---it's a business.
Jed, along with everyone at BIR have been working to make things better for us all it seems. He is willing to listen (he had the meeting at Pleasureland). He is willing to make changes (2-day events for example). I think in the end, BIR will get the program turned around to the 'racers' liking.

Reminds me of gas stations having air compressors on the side of the building for years (complimentary), and then deciding to charge 75 cents to use it. I won't pay that either!
It is the track's right to charge for whatever they want, but in all my years of racing and all the tracks I have visited I have never heard of anything like this.
I'll show my displeasure the same way I have for the past 8-9 years, which is to not show up.

| Looks like it's going to be another year without Brainerd for me. It felt kinda wierd at first, but it's kinda like smoking or drugs, the longer it is, the easier it is to stay away. |
